The Olympic Park Plans

Improvements have been made to the plans since London won the Olympic bid. The Games and the facilities left afterwards promise to be better as a result. There will be nine sports venues used during the Games and six of these will remain after the Games for use by the public.

Olympic Stadium: The 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Track and Field events. After the Games, the number of seats will reduce to 25,000 so that the stadium can host athletics and other sporting and cultural events.

Aquatics Centre: Work on the design of a world-class Aquatics Centre has already begun. This will include two 50m swimming pools and a diving pool which will remain after the Games.

Olympic Village : The Olympic Village will provide accommodation for competitors during the Games, and will be turned into much-needed housing after 2012. Click here to see a detailed map.

Broadcast and Press Centre : The International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre will provide facilities for 20,000 journalists during the Games, and will provide high quality workspace for local businesses afterwards.

Velodrome and BMX Stadium : The Velodrome and BMX stadium will be located on the site of the Eastway Cycle Circuit, which will be temporarily re-located. These facilities will be kept after the Games, together with a new cycle circuit, creating a Centre of Excellence for cycling in London.

Hockey : The Hockey Centre, made up of two stadiums, will move north into Eton Manor after the Games alongside the Paralympic Tennis Centre. This will become a new sporting centre in the north of the Park after the Games.

Concourse : A central walkway following the line of the river will be the main pedestrian route for spectators during the Games. It will remain, but on a smaller scale, afterwards.

Back of house and support facilities : Each Games venue requires support areas for administration and operations. After the Games, these areas will be redeveloped to provide housing, offices and other facilities.

Olympic Park Road : A road will be built around the perimeter of the Park, connecting all the venues. During the Games it will be used primarily by athletes and officials, to move quickly between venues. After the Games, it will become part of a network of routes through the Lower Lea Valley.

Energy : The London 2012 Games will be sustainable. On-site renewable energy, including a proposed new wind turbine, will play a key role.

Energy centre : An energy centre incorporating a Combined Cooling, Heat and Power Plant (CCHP) is proposed for Kings Yard, and will potentially sit within existing buildings on this site.

Fencing Hall: Temporary will be relocated after the Games.

Basketball Arena : Temporary will be relocated after the Games.

Fish Island & Pudding Mill Lane : As a result of work to improve the Olympic Park layout, the majority of the Fish Island and Pudding Mill Lane sites are no longer needed for the Games.

School Playing Field: A new playing field for Gainsborough School will be provided, with bridge access from the school across the river after the Games.

Links across the valley : A key priority of the design team has been creating links into the new areas after the Games, as well as safe accessible routes through the valley, in response to public concern about the need for connections.
