Oranges and Lemons say the bells of St Clements... when I grow rich say the bells of Shoreditch ...
(Read about the nursery rhyme...)

The character of an area and a community is made up of its lifestyle, environment, heritage, business and its soul .. all areas this website is interested in.

We look at our shopping scene.

We hunt out the real characters of the area and tell their stories.

We look at the environment; the culture; the heritage and the talents on offer here in Shoreditch.

Any suggestions?                Email: julie@mccreadie.com

More Light, More Power.... to the elbow of the Town Hall

Did you know that Shoreditch became famous for its progressive thinking in using an incinerator, fired by rubbish collected by the municial dustmen! This generated electricity for lighting and also for heating the public baths. The shell of Shoreditch Power Station survives ... but today it's the circus school off Hoxton Square.

Anyway, the point of telling you this story is because this why the borough adopted the motto 'More Light, More Power' which is being re-used by the Shoreditch Town Hall Trust who can now see the bright future ahead for the re-opening of the upgraded Shoreditch Town Hall. With luck and a fair wind we'll see the building, restored to its former magnificent grandeur, and available for our pleasure and for busness by the end of the year.

The picture shows the great staircase displaying the Emblem of the medieval lord of the manor of Shoreditch - two lions with one head. Have a look at my other 'before' pictures (click here)....JAY
