Oranges and Lemons say the bells of St Clements... when I grow rich say the bells of Shoreditch ...
(Read about the nursery rhyme...)

The character of an area and a community is made up of its lifestyle, environment, heritage, business and its soul .. all areas this website is interested in.

New shops and retail outlets are appearing on our Shoreditch and Hoxton streets in fast-growing numbers .... we boast  thriving street markets and local convenience shops as well as designer stores, special interest outlets and DIY outlets.

We hunt out the real characters of the area and tell their stories and we look at the environment; the culture; the heritage and the talents on offer here in Shoreditch and Hoxton. Any suggestions?

More Light, More Power.... to the elbow of the Town Hall

Did you know that Shoreditch became famous for progressive thinking in using an incinerator, fired by rubbish collected by the municipal dustmen! This generated electricity for lighting and also for heating the public baths. The shell of Shoreditch Power Station survives ... but today it's the circus school off Hoxton Square.

Picture shows the great staircase displaying the Emblem of the medieval lord of the manor of Shoreditch - two lions with one head. Have a look at other 'before' pictures (click here)

Anyway, the point of telling this story is because this why the borough adopted the motto 'More Light, More Power' which is being re-used by the Shoreditch Town Hall Trust who can now see the bright future after the re-opening of the upgraded Shoreditch Town Hall.....JAY
